EMRA: Emergency Medical Response for Acute Athletic Injury and Illness
This blended online and live course will present an in-depth view of acute injury and illness management for physical therapists interested in treating an athletic population as Emergency Medical Responders. Participants can expect an overview of emergency medical systems and legal duties/ protection of emergency medical responders. This course will also discuss bleeding and wound management to limit the transmission of diseases. Course participants can expect in-depth instruction on the components of primary and secondary assessments including cardiac and respiratory emergencies, as well as the assessment and management of face, head, spine, abdominal, and extremity injuries. This course will satisfy requirements for initial ABPTS Board-Certification and recertification of Board- Certified Sports Clinical Specialists.
Course Objectives
To design a sample emergency action plan of an athletic venue
Identify the legal duties and protection of an Emergency Medical Responder
Identify scenarios where standard and/or universal precautions should be taken to limit transmission of disease
List the steps of an on-field primary and secondary assessment
Identify the signs and symptoms of airway compromise
Explain the administration of an EpiPen during suspected anaphylaxis
Recognize the signs of cardiac emergencies
Demonstrate the steps of the chain of survival to decrease mortality
Identify types of techniques used for bleeding management
Identify signs and symptoms that require emergency referral following suspected head injury
Demonstrate a sideline examination following suspected concussion
Demonstrate spine injury management protocol for athletes with and without athletic equipment
Recognize signs and symptoms of athletic facial injuries
Analyze signs and symptoms of athletic chest, thorax, and abdominal injuries to recommend appropriate acute management
Demonstrate splinting procedures for upper and lower extremity fractures or dislocations
