ICBS: Identifying Clinical Blind Spots


With the increase in current evidence and course work around modern pain science, recommended utilization of cognitive functional based therapy, and a seismic shift to a bio-psycho-social approach to patient care, many clinicians are left wondering how to implement these changes into daily clinical practice. This course is designed to help clinicians learn how to clinically apply these highly useful concepts and help answer the ongoing questions of, and “Is what I am doing now wrong?” and “What do I do differently?”. This course is designed to help the practicing clinician identify and fill in the gaps in their knowledge base and clinical skill sets in regards to the patient interview, examination, both exercise and manual interventions and patient education. It will teach the clinician to learn how to make small changes leading to a meaningful change in their patient’s care utilizing a comprehensive and integrative physical therapy approach.

  • Demonstrate understanding and apply a multi-faceted approach to patients with LBP
  • Identify the limitations, myths and mis-conceptions regarding pain, core stability and biomechanical approaches to treatment of persistent lumbo-pelvic pain.
  • Identify and demonstrate maladaptive movement pattern subgroups in persistent low back pain patients and provide effective exercise and manual treatment interventions pertinent to each sub-group
  • Develop understanding of a strong patient communication skillset to fully engage their patients and addressing the patient’s specific needs

8:30 -10:30 – ID of the sensitized tissue and associated movement patterns. using functional testing, procedural flow and differential diagnosis principles

10:45-11:30 – Review and ID of Maladaptive Movement Pattern Sub Groups

11:30-12:00 am – Applying maladaptive patterns to other treatment approaches/models (Directional Preference, Biomechanical, Regional Interdependence, Neurophysiologic, Tissue, Impairment)

12-1 Lunch Break

1-2:00 – Functional Progressions of Maladaptive Patterns – Changing Beliefs around movement and Graded exposures

2-3:00 – Exercise dosage principle
