MPS: Modern Pain Science On-Line Course With Live Lab


This course focuses on enhancing the participant’s knowledge and understanding of how pain works and how it can impact those affected by it. In addition, an emphasis is placed on the clinical reasoning processes and technical skills related to effective patient communication, clinical management, and pain neuroscience education. The format of this course is a 6-week self-paced on-line learning experience followed by a 1-day live lab. You must complete the on-line course before participating in the lab so ensure enough time when you choose the live lab date at registration.

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to recognize pain mechanism education that is performed at a patient appropriate level.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify the difference between centrally driven, nociceptive, and peripheral neuropathic pain
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to select 3 strategies to address centrally mediated pain
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to select 3 strategies to address nociceptive driven pain
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to select 3 strategies to address peripheral neuropathic pain
  • Independently screen for faulty beliefs regarding pain.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to list 2 screening tools to address faulty behaviors such as fear avoidance and catastrophization
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to list 5 strategies (either educational or hands-on) to reduce levels of pain in a patient.
  • By the end of the course, given a case study, participants will be able to integrate pain neuroscience education within the greater context of more traditional conservative management strategies, including the use of manual therapy, exercise, and modalities.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to correctly interpret the most recent evidence as it relates to integrating pain science education into patient management
