MTX: Skilled Integration of Manual Therapy and Exercise

This course will teach you to improve exercise prescription along the continuum of the rehab process. Principles of exercise are reviewed and analyzed regarding implementation, namely through “phase progression.” The ability to make initial intervention choices and HEP prescription more impactful will be strengthened by matching common manual interventions and impairments to therapeutic exercise. Advanced exercise progressions will be demonstrated and clinical reasoning will be explained so that the concept of “phase progression” can be better applied. In addition, techniques to help bridge gaps in treatment progressions will be discussed. Specifically, PNF-like assisted techniques will be shown as an intervention to progress from passive manual intervention to independent active movement.

  • By the end of the course, the participants will be able to list 5 principles of exercise loading
  • By the end of the course, given a case study on the cervical spine, participants will demonstrate how to integrate 3 principles of exercise loading into a treatment protocol
  • By the end of the course, given a case study of a patient presenting with cervical spine pain, participants will be able to verbally justify 1 manual and 1 exercise intervention citing current evidence.
  • By the end of the course, given case examples, participants will be able to correctly identify 5 patient responses to loading that would require modification.
  • By the end of the course participants will be able to verbalize 2 feedback mechanisms for patient education regarding exercise performance.
  • By the end of the course, given a specific manual therapy technique, participants will be able to independently select an exercise that corresponds in order to maximize improvements of the comparable sign impairment within session.
  • By the end of the course, participants will correctly describe 1 parameter each for using resistance training to improve: strength, power, and endurance.
