MTTA: Myofascial Treatment and Taping Applications


This course covers clinical examination and treatment of the soft tissue components of the musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system. This course focuses on soft tissue assessment in regards to its influence on common musculoskeletal conditions such as tendonopathy, myofascial pain syndromes and associated muscle guarding that occurs with common injuries. It is primarily hands on and focuses on surface anatomy palpation, deep palpation of all major muscle groups and manual therapy soft tissue mobilization techniques designed to reduce pain, improve mobility and improve function throughout the entire body. Complimentary to the hands on component of this course is the introduction to basic taping techniques designed to offload soft tissue, inhibit or facilitate the firing of specific muscles and help with proprioception of specific movement patterns throughout the body. All required prereading material will be sent in a link via your registration confirmation email. Please bring a pair of athletic shorts and a sport top to this course.

  • Explain the presented theories of myofascial treatment
  • To understand the difference between peripheral nerve pain and trigger points
  • Demonstrate and safely apply IAMT’s treatment principles
  • To apply the presented myofascial treatment techniques in a safe and consistent manner
  • To be able to apply the theories, principles and techniques of myofascial treatment in the students practice of physical therapy
  • Convey the topics in the current Literature on myofascial treatment as it applies to evidenced-based practice of physical therapy
  • Describe the evaluation and treatment of the soft tissue system as described by IAMT
  • Apply the current literature on myofascial treatment in their clinical evaluation and treatment decision-making process
  • Proficiently demonstrate the myofascial treatment techniques as described by IAMT
  • Describe the various theories, principles and techniques of myofascial treatment as described by IAMT
  • Demonstrate and apply the clinical reasoning approach to the procedural flow in the clinical examination and treatment process
  • Identify conditions appropriate for taping
  • Identify precautions/contraindications
  • Rationalize physiologic responses to taping
  • Choose appropriate taping techniques
  • Progress taping interventions related to exercise progression and/or functional needs
