TOA: Treating the Overhead Athlete: Regional Interdependence and Beyond


Cutting-edge techniques, up-to-date evidence, and hands on learning an covered in this course in order to improve and develop the clinician’s ability to treat the overhead athlete from injury to performance. Utilizing evolving evidence and novel manual and exercise techniques from the sports world, clinicians will be taught the secrets to assessing and treating complex shoulder dysfunction. Clinicians will Integrate regional interdependence models with differential diagnosis to unlock the secrets of developing comprehensive strategies to return the most difficult overhead athletes to their sport.

  • By the end of the course, given a case study for a patient shoulder impingement, the participants will independently integrate 3 exercise progressions based on objective and functional impairments.
  • By the end of the course, given a case study on a labrum lesion participants will correctly list 3 special tests to confirm a diagnosis of a labrum lesion.
  • By the end of the course, given a case study on RTC tear, participants will independently design a return to sport program.
  • By the end of the course, given a case study on shoulder pain, participants will independently perform a functional upper quarter screen.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to list 3 risk factors for shoulder hypermobility.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to integrate 3 strategies for shoulder rehab based on case study or sport specific demands.
  • By the end of the course, participants will independently develop a home program for shoulder impingement given a case study
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to independently describe the upper quarter screens role in patient evaluation.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to independently educate a patient how to correctly perform UE stretching techniques.
  • By the end of the course, given a case study participants will integrate 4 adjunct treatment activities into a treatment program.
  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to independently prescribe appropriate manual techniques for case study.
  • By the end of the course, participants will independently demonstrate appropriate grades and application of glenohumeral joint mobilizations given a case study.
